The Venue: URJC Madrid Campus

The Summer School will be held at the facilities that the Rey Juan Carlos University has in the Madrid Campus located in the Madrid district of Vicálvaro. The address is:

Facilities include a magnificent auditorium, a library, meeting rooms, a cafeteria, two canteens, ATM machines, a Santander Bank office, a bookstore, printing services, and the university residence at very economical prices.

 

    

Reaching the Campus

The campus is well connected to the city center and other areas by various modes of transportation, including:

  • By train: Vicalvaro Station C-2, C-7 (Renfe commuter trains) 
  • By metro: The closest metro station is Vicálvaro Station stop (Line 9), just next to the main entrance to the campus.
  • By bus: There are four locations around the campus where the following bus lines stop:​
    • Daroca Street stop: lines 4, 100, 106, N7 (night bus)
    • Daroca Street-Camino Viejo: 4, 100, 106, 130
    • Artilleros Street-S. Cipriano: 4, 106, E3, N7 (night bus)
    • Calahorra Street: 4, 106, 130, N7 (night bus)

Public transportation fares

For both metro and city buses, you will have to acquire a reloadable, non-personal, contactless public transport MultiCard, which has a price of 2.5 euros. It can be acquired and reloaded in automatic machines at Metro stations (but not in the buses). At the present time, the card may be loaded with up to three non-personal tickets. This permits the following: 

  • Use of the same card by different persons for different journeys. 
  • Payment of the fare for accompanying persons making the same journey.
  • Loading transport tickets for journeys differing from the usual one

Notice that Multicard is designed to contain transport passes, not money. Therefore, the remaining journeys in a ticket cannot be used to buy another one, nor can they be refunded. Multicard can be reloaded with single tickets, 10-trip tickets, airport special tickets, and the Tourist Pass. The last one gives you unlimited access to all forms of public transport. There are five kinds of season tickets: for 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days. The validity of the tourist passes is counted by calendar day; the day the first journey is made is the first day of use. Reaching Madrid

The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is 12 kilometers northeast of the city.  There are several options to move from the airport to the city center:

  • Underground. Metro line 8 runs from all the airport terminals to Nuevos Ministerios station in central Madrid, where you can connect with other lines. A map of the Madrid Metro can be downloaded from:  http://www.metromadrid.es/en. 
  • Taxi. All airport terminals have clearly signed taxi ranks outside the arrivals area. Official taxis are white with a red stripe and the coat-of-arms of Madrid City Council on the doors. The trip from the airport to the city center has a fixed price of 33 euros. There is no supplement for luggage. 
  • Uber, Cabify, or FREENOW services are also good alternatives; use your regular app to book a ride.
  • City bus. Several bus lines run from the airport to central Madrid;  check the routes and schedules here.

Weather

The weather in Madrid during the first half of July is generally hot and sunny, with average temperatures during the day ranging from 32 to 34 °C (90 to 93 °F). Due to Madrid's altitude and dry climate, humidity is low. Attendees are advised to bring lightweight, comfortable clothing and sunscreen to protect themselves from the intense heat and sun during potential outdoor activities. Madrid is among the sunniest capital cities in Europe.
